Tender is the Night

Tender is the Night - Cover Design

This is a self-initiated book cover for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender is The Night. I illustrated the cover based on the main theme of the book which I believe is transference, it is the act of one entity taking from another. In this case, Dick Diver begins the novel as strong successful doctor to his weak unstable wife Nicole, as the book goes on their roles begin the reverse. Nicole gains strength from Dick and in effect, Dick starts to fall to her initial position.

To keep true to the time period I chose typefaces from the 1920s. The title font being Reynold and the spine font is CAT Childs Regular. On the back cover I added a few lines from Yeats “Ode to a Nightingale” which gives the book its title. These lines set the scene for what is to come thoughout the novel and explain the imagery of the night as a symbol.
